College of Science Hosts Academic Lecture by Dr. Gao Yan on Nanoplastics in Environmental and Biological Media

  • June 13, 2025 News

The College of Science at Shantou University held an academic lecture at 14:30 on June 13, 2025, in High-Level Experimental Building C302, titled "Separation, Determination, and Migration Processes of Nanoparticles in Environmental and Biological Media." This event was part of the "Science Salon" series, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Marine Biotechnology series, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Marine Disaster Warning and Prevention series, and the Marine Science Long-Term Foundation Construction series.

The speaker, Dr. Gao Yan from Guangzhou University, earned her Ph.D. from Shandong University and conducted postdoctoral research at Guangzhou University, with a visiting postdoctoral position at the University of Macau from 2023 to 2024. Dr. Gao's research focuses on the separation, determination, and biological effects of nanoparticles in the environment. She has published 8 SCI papers as first/co-first/corresponding author in journals such as Water Research and Analytical Chemistry, co-authored over 10 additional papers, and received awards including grants from the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation and the CAIA Award.

During the lecture, Dr. Gao addressed challenges in detecting nanoparticles and presented a protein corona-induced extraction method that enhances enrichment efficiency while preserving particle morphology. Her work also explores the size-dependent accumulation and toxicological effects of nanoparticles in aquatic organisms, laying a foundation for risk assessment of emerging pollutants.

The lecture welcomed participation from the university community, showcasing Shantou University's dedication to scientific discourse and innovation.
