Shantou University Launches Fourth Round of Core Course Collection, Encouraging Interdisciplinary Programs

The Academic Affairs Office and the Institute of Higher Education have jointly launched the fourth round of core course applications, aimed at further strengthening the university’s general education curriculum system. Since 2013, three rounds of collection have resulted in 70 approved core courses receiving institutional funding.
Core Course System
According to the resolution of the University Academic Committee, starting with the 2013 undergraduate cohort, the new core course framework serves as the primary vehicle for implementing general education. The university plans to establish a more complete curriculum system over the next two to three years.
The core course system spans three domains and 13 course groups:
| Domain | Course Groups | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Domain 1: Citizenship and Society | Several groups | Priority area for new submissions |
| Domain 2: Culture and Values | Several groups | Priority for courses such as History of Chinese Philosophy |
| Domain 3: Quantitative Reasoning and Philosophy of Science | Several groups | Priority for quantitative reasoning, philosophy of science |
Priority Areas for This Round
Given the uneven distribution of currently approved courses across domains and groups, this round particularly welcomes applications in the following areas:
| Priority Direction | Specific Course Areas |
|---|---|
| Domain 1 | Chinese-focused courses under “Citizenship and Society” |
| Domain 2 | History of Chinese Philosophy under “Culture and Values” |
| Domain 3 | Quantitative Reasoning, Philosophy of Science |
| Interdisciplinary | Comprehensive courses such as “Energy,” “Genetically Modified Organisms” |
