Shantou University Launches Fourth Round of Core Course Collection, Encouraging Interdisciplinary Programs

The Academic Affairs Office and the Institute of Higher Education have jointly launched the fourth round of core course applications, aimed at further strengthening the university’s general education curriculum system. Since 2013, three rounds of collection have resulted in 70 approved core courses receiving institutional funding.

Core Course System

According to the resolution of the University Academic Committee, starting with the 2013 undergraduate cohort, the new core course framework serves as the primary vehicle for implementing general education. The university plans to establish a more complete curriculum system over the next two to three years.

The core course system spans three domains and 13 course groups:

Domain Course Groups Details
Domain 1: Citizenship and Society Several groups Priority area for new submissions
Domain 2: Culture and Values Several groups Priority for courses such as History of Chinese Philosophy
Domain 3: Quantitative Reasoning and Philosophy of Science Several groups Priority for quantitative reasoning, philosophy of science

Priority Areas for This Round

Given the uneven distribution of currently approved courses across domains and groups, this round particularly welcomes applications in the following areas:

Priority Direction Specific Course Areas
Domain 1 Chinese-focused courses under “Citizenship and Society”
Domain 2 History of Chinese Philosophy under “Culture and Values”
Domain 3 Quantitative Reasoning, Philosophy of Science
Interdisciplinary Comprehensive courses such as “Energy,” “Genetically Modified Organisms”

Application Guidelines

Courses approved by the Core Course Expert Panel and listed in the “Core Course Catalog” will receive funding and must be offered each semester.

Applying faculty members must submit the following materials to the Teaching Section of the Academic Affairs Office by Monday, November 17, 2014:

Core Course Application Form One paper copy (template attached)
Course Syllabus One paper copy (templates and writing references attached)

An electronic copy must also be emailed to zzhang@stu.edu.cn. The Core Course Expert Panel will review submissions promptly and provide revision feedback to syllabus authors.
