Shantou University Library has launched its Reading Spaces initiative, strategically placing over 33,000 books across various public areas on campus. The project aims to extend the boundaries of the traditional library and create a campus-wide atmosphere where reading is always within reach.

Deployment Locations

Zone Location
Academic Area Public spaces in teaching buildings
Student Living Area Dormitory floor common areas and building lobbies
Dining Area Student cafeteria resting zones
Sports Area Waiting areas in sports venues
Outdoor Spaces Resting areas beside campus green spaces and walkways

Book Selection

Drawing on faculty and student reading preferences and the characteristics of each setting, the library curated a diverse collection spanning literature, history, philosophy, art, science, technology, and beyond. The selection balances scholarly monographs with accessible popular titles, catering to both serious academic readers and those seeking leisure reading.

Project Philosophy

At the heart of the Reading Spaces initiative is the idea that reading should integrate into everyday life. By embedding book resources into spaces where the campus community congregates regularly, the project transforms fragmented waiting times and breaks into valuable reading opportunities, lowers the barrier to reading, and stimulates interest among all members of the university community.

Since the project launch, reading points across campus have been progressively equipped with books and shelving units, with some spaces now open for use. Students and staff can browse freely during their spare moments.

Future Plans

Library officials stated that they will continuously refine collections based on circulation data and reader feedback, and are considering expanding the Reading Spaces network to additional locations across campus.
