Science Salon Series: Prof Fan Yun to Deliver Academic Lecture
It is reported that the Faculty of Science at Shantou University will host a lecture in its “Science Salon” series on July 23, featuring Professor Yun Fan from the University of Birmingham, who will deliver a talk titled “Dying Cell Talk: Apoptosis-induced Proliferation, Regeneration, and Cancer.”
Professor Yun is currently a Birmingham Scholar (PI) at the University of Birmingham and serves as a researcher at the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Marine Biotechnology. She received her bachelor’s degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 1998, her master’s degree from Sun Yat-sen University in 2001, and her PhD from the University of Basel, Switzerland, in 2005. She subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the University of Massachusetts Medical School in the United States. In 2012, Professor Yun was selected into the UK’s Outstanding Talent Introduction Program, appointed as a Birmingham Scholar, and has since led the EU Marie Curie Fellowship Programme along with multiple UK national research fund projects.
Professor Yun’s research team investigates the regulatory mechanisms of apoptosis and the role of signaling factors released during apoptosis in cancer development and tissue regeneration. Her groundbreaking work on apoptosis-induced proliferation has garnered significant international attention and holds important clinical implications. Research suggests that inhibiting signaling factors released by apoptotic cells could further optimize conventional cancer treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
In her presentation, Professor Yun will introduce how her laboratory uses fruit flies as animal models to discover and characterize the molecular mechanisms controlling the release of signaling factors from apoptotic cells, along with the latest research progress in this field.
The lecture will be held at 10:00 a.m. on July 23, 2026, in Room C302 of the High-Level Experimental Building. All faculty members and students are welcome to attend.
