According to Toutiao News, on June 23, the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College held a brain-computer interface (BCI) clinical translation event, officially inaugurating its Brain-Computer Interface Medical Center. The center focuses on BCI therapy, rehabilitation training, and clinical research, marking a strategic leap forward in the integration of medical and engineering disciplines.

Clinical Translation Focus

BCI technology has been designated as one of the key future industries under China’s “15th Five-Year Plan,” currently transitioning from laboratory validation to clinical application. The center is positioned as a joint research base combining clinical treatment and scientific translation, concentrating on BCI therapy and rehabilitation for neurological disorders. STU President Professor Hao Zhifeng has been invited as the center’s advisor and delivered a keynote lecture on BCI innovation at the intersection of medicine and engineering.

First Clinical Project Launched

A non-invasive multimodal BCI clinical project targeting Alzheimer’s disease, led by Vice President Chen Jian of the First Affiliated Hospital, has officially commenced — the center’s first clinical application. The center, directed by Chen Jian, integrates neurology, rehabilitation, and other multidisciplinary resources. Moving forward, the hospital will deepen collaboration with Shantou University and research institutions to accelerate clinical translation and establish the center as a neuroscience innovation hub in eastern Guangdong.
