Prof. Cheng Haiying to deliver first "Houde Lecture" on June 18

It is reported that the Office of the Party Committee for Teachers’ Work at Shantou University will launch the inaugural “Houde Lecture” series on teacher ethics, with the first lecture scheduled for the morning of June 18. Prof. Cheng Haiying, Dean of the School of Marxism, will serve as the keynote speaker.

Lecture Theme

The theme of the lecture is “What is Better Education: Exploring the Rich Connotations of the Educator Spirit.” Teaching ethics is the foundation and source of educational excellence. The university aims to vigorously promote the educator spirit through this series of lectures, deepen the initiative of forging stronger teaching capabilities through the educator spirit, comprehensively enhance the ideological and political literacy and teaching abilities of faculty members, and foster a campus culture that reveres virtue and dedicates itself to education.

Speaker Profile

Cheng Haiying, originally from Hengyang, Hunan, holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy. He is a professor at Shantou University and Dean of the School of Marxism, as well as a special researcher at the Guangdong Provincial Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. He has been a visiting scholar at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Fudan University, and National Taiwan University. He currently serves as vice president of the Guangdong Ethics Society, vice president of the Guangdong Deng Xiaoping Theory Research Society, standing director of the Guangdong Philosophical Society, and a member of the 2025–2029 Guangdong Higher Education Ideological and Political Theory Course Teaching Guidance Committee. His research interests include Marxist theory, literary ethics, and aesthetics.

In recent years, Prof. Cheng has presided over two post-funding projects of the National Social Science Fund of China, two Ministry of Education humanities and social science projects, and more than ten provincial social science fund and planning projects. He has published three monographs and over 60 academic papers. His lectures at universities, including “Where the Heart Finds Peace,” “This Feeling Cannot Be Erased,” “This Thing Most Loved in the South,” “Walking in the Light of Beauty,” and “Love the Still Bow, But Even More the Arrow That Flies,” have been widely popular among students and faculty.
