Outstanding Graduate: Jiang ZH — Meeting Broader Horizons Through Perseverance
It is reported that the Engineering College of Shantou University has launched an outstanding graduate showcase series. This edition features Jiang ZH, a 2026 PhD graduate from the Department of Civil and Smart Construction Engineering, who also earned a doctoral degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Politecnico di Torino in Italy. His research focuses on innovative applications of acoustic emission in engineering structures and earthquake precursor identification.
Prolific Research Output
During his doctoral studies, Jiang ZH published 17 high-level papers in domestic and international journals, including 14 SCI-indexed papers and one granted patent. He authored 10 SCI papers as first author or second author (with his supervisor as first), including 3 in CAS Zone 1 top journals and 3 in Zone 2 journals. Representative publications appear in Engineering Structures, Structures, Construction and Building Materials, and Natural Hazards and Earth System Science. His doctoral dissertation defense was rated outstanding.
He has also served as a reviewer for multiple international journals including Composites Part B: Engineering, Engineering Failure Analysis, Applied Acoustics, and Construction and Building Materials, completing over 30 reviews to date.
Active International Engagement
Jiang ZH presented at the 12th International Conference on Fracture Mechanics of Concrete and Concrete Structures (FraMCoS-12) in Vienna, Austria, and the 21st International Conference on Experimental Mechanics (ICEM-21) in Bologna, Italy. He also attended the RILEM 2026 Spring Conference in Ghent, Belgium, and the ARTISTE International Conference on Machine Learning in Civil Engineering and Architecture in Turin.
Supported by a China Scholarship Council (CSC) scholarship, he pursued a dual doctoral degree at Politecnico di Torino under the supervision of Professor Giuseppe Lacidogna, a member of the Academy of Sciences internationally renowned in fracture mechanics and acoustic emission. Jiang ZH is the first student to complete the dual-degree program since the agreement was signed between the two universities, marking a significant milestone in the Engineering College’s international talent cultivation efforts.
Honors and Awards
- China Scholarship Council (CSC) State-Funded Scholarship
- National Scholarship for Doctoral Students
- Guangdong Province Outstanding Young Research Talent International Training Program
- Annual Outstanding Paper Award from Journal of Southeast University (Natural Science Edition)
Mentorship and Research Platform
Jiang ZH’s doctoral supervisor, Professor Zhu Zhiwen, leads the Structural and Wind Tunnel Key Laboratory of Guangdong Higher Education Institutions, which maintains high-level research platforms for wind engineering and structural health monitoring. The team is active in structural wind engineering, seismic engineering, and structural health monitoring, supported by the first-level doctoral program and postdoctoral research station in civil engineering. Jiang ZH credits his supervisor for providing both academic freedom and meticulous guidance, creating a supportive environment for rigorous research.
