63rd Yangtze River Forum Explores Nuclear Science Frontiers
To advance the physics discipline and foster innovative talent, Shantou University will host the 63rd Yangtze River Forum on June 8, featuring CAS Academician Liu Weiping from the Institute of Atomic Energy and Southern University of Science and Technology.
The lecture, titled “Frontiers in Nuclear Science and Technology,” will take place at 15:00 in the Library Auditorium on the Sangpu Mountain Campus.
Speaker Profile
Liu Weiping is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and chair professor at Southern University of Science and Technology. He also serves as director of the Science and Technology Committee at the Institute of Atomic Energy. He previously served as president of the Asian Nuclear Physics Association and as director of the Beijing Tandem Accelerator Nuclear Physics Laboratory.
He led the construction of China’s first low-energy secondary radioactive beam experimental facility, filling a domestic gap at the time. His team obtained the 7Be(p,γ)8B reaction cross section that produces high-energy solar neutrinos. He also established internationally distinctive indirect measurement methods for nuclear astrophysical reactions and oversaw the upgrading of a tandem accelerator and the first round of physics experiments following the upgrade.
Liu has received the Qiu Shi Outstanding Young Scholar Award, the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. He currently leads both the National Natural Science Foundation Innovation Research Group and a major project on deep-underground nuclear astrophysics, with initial results already produced.
