Talk 1: AIE Technology for Algal Growth & Lipid Production

Speaker: Prof. Qin Jianguang (Guangzhou Marine Lab)

Time: May 30, 3:00–4:00 PM

Venue: Admin Building East E401

About the Speaker

Prof. Qin Jianguang earned his PhD from Ohio State University and was a tenured professor at Flinders University. He was named among the world’s Top 100 Fisheries Scientists (2022), received Hainan’s International S&T Cooperation Award (2023), and has been on Stanford’s Top 2% Scientists list for 5 consecutive years. He has 400+ SCI papers (18,000+ citations, h-index 68) and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Aquaculture.

Abstract

This research uses aggregation-induced emission (AIE) photosensitizers to convert green-yellow light to red spectrum, enhancing photosynthesis and lipid production in microalgae. AIE nanoparticle technology offers a new approach for sustainable bioproducts.

Talk 2: Key Points in Cultivated Spirulina Taxonomy

Speaker: Prof. Li Renhui (Wenzhou University)

Time: May 30, 4:00–5:00 PM

Venue: Admin Building East E401

About the Speaker

Prof. Li Renhui earned his PhD from the University of Tsukuba, Japan. He was selected for the CAS “100 Talents Plan” and served as Director of the Algae Research Center at the Institute of Hydrobiology, CAS. He led water quality assurance projects for the Wuhan Military World Games (2019) and Hangzhou Asian Games (2023). He serves as Associate Editor of Phycologia and Journal of Systematics and Evolution.

Abstract

The talk focuses on the classification of cultivated spirulina, tracing the evolution of cyanobacteria taxonomy and the polyphasic identification approach. It clarifies the taxonomic history of Spirulina, Arthrospira, and the newly established genus Limnospira (2019), confirming that Spirulina platensis belongs to Limnospira — important for export and standard setting.
