83rd Leadership-Student Dinner Q&A: Campus Safety, Career Guidance, and More

Overview

The 83rd Leadership-Student Dinner was recently held, where university leaders responded to student questions covering logistics, infrastructure, campus traffic safety, academic guidance, teaching management, and residential college operations.

Campus Logistics

  • Pest control: Sangpushan Campus conducts pest elimination three times per week with concurrent standing water removal.
  • Street lighting: The Resource Management Office will inspect poorly lit areas including paths near the package station and Building D/E, with plans to add and repair lights.
  • Snake warning: Snake activity is high this season. For encounters, call campus security at 86504110; for snake bites, call the campus clinic at 86502651.
  • Waste management: Zhixing College will increase daily trash collection frequency.

Infrastructure

  • Hot water supply: Graduate dormitory hot water hours will remain unchanged after a noise impact assessment.
  • Dorm lighting: Students can submit repair requests via the “汕大网上报修” WeChat mini program.
  • E-bike charging: No new charging stations will be added as the university manages e-bike reduction; existing chargers may be upgraded for efficiency.
  • Graduate workspace: The university will optimize research space and workstation allocation through campus planning.

Campus Traffic Safety

  • E-bike permits: Sangpushan Campus controls e-bike growth and reduces existing numbers. Students who purchased e-bikes before October 31, 2025, or live off-campus may apply for permits.
  • Southwest gate road: The university has reported safety concerns for the Daxue Road–Diejin intersection to city authorities, who determined that traffic signals are not suitable there. Students are advised to exercise caution.

Academic & Career Guidance

  • Career support: Schools will enhance activities leveraging faculty and alumni resources for better-targeted career guidance.
  • Postgraduate recommendations: Advisors value research literacy and academic potential; innovation project experience, competition awards, and publications significantly strengthen applications.
  • Early research guidance: Schools will host lectures and faculty meetups to help lower-year students explore research directions early.
  • Study abroad: International exchange programs are gradually resuming after pandemic-related disruptions.

Teaching Management

  • Scholarship criteria: Graduate scholarship evaluation methods will be revised with student input.
  • Internship timing: Schools will explore batch-based internship scheduling to allow flexible timing.
  • Practical courses: Curriculum revisions are planned this year to add more practice-oriented courses.

Residential College Management

  • Gym hours: Zhixing College will survey students and extend gym operating hours accordingly.
  • Shared kitchen: Residential mentors will increase inspection and cleaning frequency.
