International Students Join Huaqiao Middle School Cultural Exchange Festival
Cultural Activities
On May 9–10, 20 international students from countries including Thailand, Turkmenistan, Australia, Vietnam, and Indonesia participated in the 4th International Cultural Exchange Festival and Campus Open Day at Shantou Huaqiao Middle School.
Calligraphy experience: Students visited the calligraphy room to observe a teacher’s live demonstration, then practiced writing the character “梦” (dream) under guidance, experiencing the depth of Chinese calligraphy.
Tech-meets-culture workshop: Students learned about Chaoshan overseas Chinese heritage elements including remittance letters (侨批), peach-shaped kueh, and traditional window patterns. Using programming tools, they created digital works blending traditional motifs with modern technology.
Country Booths
On the second day, international students set up country booths featuring local culture, food, and games:
- Turkmenistan: Traditional cuisine and “passports,” with language games drawing long queues
- Thailand: Classic jacks games and Thai specialties attracted enthusiastic participation from students and teachers
- Indonesia: Progressive language challenges with lucky draws — all 400 prepared gifts were given away
- Australia: Displays featuring the “boxing kangaroo” and Southern Hemisphere specialties drew curious crowds of students and parents
Significance
The event allowed international students to bridge language and cultural barriers in a relaxed atmosphere, making friends and broadening horizons. The STU International College stated it will continue using overseas Chinese culture as a link to create more cultural bridges for international students to explore Chinese heritage.
