According to Guan Media, on March 21 the “Co-creating and Co-existing: The 2026 In-depth Reporting and Journalism Teaching Seminar” opened at Shantou University’s Sangpu Mountain Campus. The event was co-hosted by the Applied Journalism Committee of the Chinese Journalism History Society and STU’s Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication, and organized by the school’s Center for Chinese-characteristic Applied Journalism.
Set against the backdrop of omnimedia development and AI reshaping the communication ecosystem, the seminar focused on the craft and principles of professional news production amid media transformation, exploring new paths for journalism education and talent cultivation.
Academia and Industry on Journalism Education
Professor Huang Xiaochun, Director of STU’s Research Office, stressed in his opening remarks the need to stay true to the fundamental mission of Party journalism and to innovate while upholding core principles. Professor Tao Jianjie of Fudan University’s School of Journalism, who chairs the Applied Journalism Committee, said the committee plans to adopt the STU journal “Applied Journalism Studies” as its official publication, elevating school-society cooperation. Professor Mao Hao, head of the Cheung Kong School of Journalism, noted that “low-altitude research” close to frontline practice is both important and necessary, and called for academia and industry to work together to turn scattered practical experience into systematic scholarship.
At the meeting, Huang Xiaochun presented “Distinguished Researcher of the Center for Chinese-characteristic Applied Journalism” certificates to Zhang Zhian (Fudan), Tao Jianjie (Fudan) and Liu Hailong (Renmin University). Keynote speeches then followed from Zhang Zhian, Bai Hongyi, Liu Hailong and Wang Chenyao.
